Let's Visit Mama and Mami's Village! Mamachya Gavala Jauya – Summer Camp
In the heart of Ratnagiri, nestled in a quaint little lane, live extraordinary people shaped by the hands of God in a unique way. These individuals embody the essence of Ratnagiri’s red stones, the richness of coconut and jackfruit, the sweetness of khajur (dates), and the refreshing quality of tender betel nuts—qualities that define them. For years, I had heard tales of these people, wondering how wonderful it would be to spend time in their company.
And as fate would have it, the opportunity finally presented itself.
A group of close friends, connected at the heart, set out towards Ratnagiri. We needed a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life, a chance to unwind in the lap of nature. As we arrived at Mama’s doorstep, Mami welcomed us with the same warmth and care one would expect after a triumphant return from battle. Her simple act of removing the evil eye cast upon us with utmost importance won over our hearts immediately.
And then, without blinking, we began to take in the marvels around us.
A 210-year-old traditional Konkan house, a temple with a sacred sanctum, old wooden chairs, ancient staircases, and utensils that have seen generations pass by—all lovingly maintained by Mama and Mami, these rustic souls. Their very essence was infused with the qualities of the red stones, coconut, jackfruit, khajur, and tender betel nuts. Not just that, they also carried the richness of the Kalmi Hapus mangoes, the tanginess of karvanda berries, and the juiciness of jackfruit.
The home, aptly named ‘Rustic Holidays,’ was a living embodiment of our cultural heritage. The moment we stepped inside, we felt the same warmth and comfort one would feel in a mother’s embrace. The walls of the house stood tall, carrying with them over 200 years of experience, and we relished the traditional meals cooked on the wood-fired stove, feeling as though each dish was a conversation with history. We began with the customary ‘Vadhani Kavala’ and savored each bite, ending with the ‘Bharat Vakya’—a fitting finale, complete with the signature Konkani burp that left us fully satisfied.
Mama and Mami’s love knew no bounds.
Upon seeing us for the first time, these two individuals welcomed us with a ritualistic greeting, instantly forming a bond that felt like family. They fed us with the same care and love one would show a child, guiding us with the wisdom they had gathered over the years. And though we were reluctant to leave, with teary eyes, they sent us off with renewed strength and determination to face our battles back home.
It wasn’t just about going back to fight; we all felt a deep need to return and spend the rest of our lives in this serene place. And so, we plan to return time and again, until one day, we may retire from our battles altogether and live out our days here.
I can only say that the people of Konkan, much like its fruits, are ripened with rich experiences, carrying a sweetness that is truly unparalleled.
